RAM Truck Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

How do you know which new RAM truck is right for life in Missouri and Illinois? Your truck experts at Ward Chrysler Center in Carbondale offer this quick FAQ to help match your next truck to what you need.

What is the difference between a truck and a pickup?

A truck is a larger category of vehicles that hauls heavy materials and cargo. It includes tankers, flatbeds, and semi-trailers. Due to its large size, trucks typically require a special professional license to drive. A pickup is a truck with a separate cab and an open bed for cargo. It does not require a special professional license to drive. For consumers, the terms "truck," "pickup," and "pickup truck" are used interchangeably.

Pickup trucks are designed to carry plenty of cargo and tow heavy trailers. They can negotiate highways with heavy traffic and off-road trails challenged by rough obstacles. With available leather seating, advanced infotainment, and safety tech, many pickups can rival sedans in comfort and amenities.

What do GVWR and GCWR mean?

GVWR is the acronym for Gross Vehicle Weight Rating and is the weight of the truck, passengers, and payload in the bed and cab. The Gross Combined Weight Rating or GCWR is the maximum possible weight of your truck, the trailer, and any people and cargo that you are hauling. Subtract the truck's GVWR from the GCWR for the vehicle, and you get the maximum tow rating.

What is a heavy-duty truck?

A heavy-duty truck like the RAM 2500, RAM 3500, and RAM Chassis Cab are built with a sturdy frame, stronger suspension, and more robust power systems designed to stand up to the demands of hauling heavier loads, plowing, and working construction sites. For personal use, a heavy-duty truck is often the smart choice for pulling a fifth-wheel, boat, or gooseneck trailer.

Which RAM truck is built for off-roading and remote work sites?

All RAM trucks can be configured with 4X4 capability. If you are interested in exploring unpaved trails, look at the Rebel or the TRX trims. Are you exploring hiking trails and campsites? The Trail-rated Jeep Gladiator Rubicon or Mojave is ready to crawl over rocks with an open-air experience.

Is there a RAM built as a working truck?

The RAM Tradesman model provides all the muscle needed with the vinyl flooring and bench seating ready to get dirty during your work day.

Which bed size is right for hauling building supplies?

For hauling full sheets of drywall and plywood, the RAM 2500 and RAM 3500 are available with an 8-foot bed. The RAM 1500 features a 6-foot 4-inch or 5-foot 7-inch bed that can accommodate a 4-foot X 8-foot sheet with the tail down and the addition of a MOPAR bed extender accessory.
